While polyamory and polyamorists are often viewed as a very welcoming bunch, far too often our communities and representation appear very limited. While we can be loud and proud when it comes to feminism and LGBT issues, sometimes we are suspiciously silent in regards to race. Beyond that, we sometimes, and often unknowingly, foster a standoff-ish, stressful or downright unwelcoming atmosphere around people of color.

Open Love NY is pleased to welcome back author and friend Kevin Patterson for a discussion about why diversity is important to our movement. We will tackle ways that we can proactively promote an inclusive environment in our lives, in our communities, and at our events. Most importantly, we will go over what we can do to maintain that diversity.

Open Love NY is donating 20 free copies of Kevin’s book, “Love’s Not Color Blind” to the first 20 members to request a copy via email to openloveny@gmail.com from now until June 23rd. Attendance at the event is not required to request a book.

Open Love NY’s events depend on your donations to keep them accessible to all. Please consider donating $5 to $10 through Venmo @Open-LoveNY so we can continue organizing events for our community.

Speaker Bio: Kevin Patterson is an active member of the Philadelphia polyamory community. He’s been practicing ethical nonmonogamy since August of 2002 after opening up a relationship that eventually became his marriage. In April of 2015, Kevin was inspired to start Poly Role Models, an interview series for people describing their experiences with polyamory. Poly Role Models is part of a drive and a desire to change the way our lives and communities are viewed. It is currently the most diverse and inclusive platform for polyamory available. To continue the discussion of polyamorous representation, Kevin has extended the blog’s work into nationwide speaking engagements about how race and polyamory intersect. This has led to the writing of the book, Love’s Not Color Blind: Race and Representation in Polyamorous and Other Alternative Communities. Along with co-writer Alana Phelan, Kevin launched a sci-fi novel series, For Hire. The series centers characters of color and as well as other marginalized identities.

Please consider supporting Kevin with his endeavors by donating to his Venmo or CashApp @PolyRoleModels.
